Prem Rawat in Santiago, Chile 1st May 2011
Thank you. So, first of all, thank you for coming today. And what I'm about to tell you is not just words. There's many people who come, they make speeches, they talk about life, they talk about God, they talk about you, and then that's it. Sometimes they are great inspirers. But for me, the main thing is not only to come talk about the reality, the beauty, but then have a way to be able to feel that beauty, to be able to realize that beauty. And that's what I do. So, this is not just words. There is a possibility that you can also feel what I talk about. Having said that, let me tell you a story. I see everybody is like, relax, it's okay. You are alive. Best news. You have won the lottery. You have won the riches. You have everything in you. All the peace you could ever want is inside of you, all the love you could ever could have is inside of you. In fact, what's inside of you is the divine. It's the divine. But you don't know it. You have some other ideas.
So, this story is perfect. Once upon a time, there was this rabbit. He was going around the forest, jumping, happy. You know what rabbits do? They go to the leaves and they get up and they smell for danger. And so, this bunny was doing the same thing, jumping, jumping, smelling, smelling, smelling, and it smelled danger. And before this rabbit could do anything, a huge lion comes up to the rabbit and says, I'm going to eat you. And the poor rabbit is very scared. Very scared. So, the rabbit says to himself, rabbit, think. Think. Think. Because you only have a few minutes left of your life. And think, because that is the only way you can get out of this situation. So, the rabbit looks at the lion and he says, "Stop. You can't eat me." The lion looks at the rabbit and says, "what makes you say I can't eat you? Of course, I'm going to eat you. I'm hungry. I'm going to make a good breakfast. I'm going to eat you." The rabbit says, "No, no, no, no, no. You're not going to eat me. I am a very special rabbit. In fact, I have been sent here by the Lord of the jungle to reign over all the animals that live in this jungle. And all the animals know this, except you." The lion is puzzled. The lion says, "Okay, prove it. Prove it." So the bunny says, "fine, follow me. I will show you." And so if you can imagine, there's the bunny, and he's jumping, and a big lion is following him. And all these animals, they see the two coming, and they go. Upon seeing this, the lion said, "Powerful bunny. Everybody is afraid of him. Everybody is afraid of him. This must be true." So that day, the bunny successfully saved his life. You know, I hope you know, who they were afraid of was not the bunny, it was the lion. Same thing with us. Who are we? What are we? We have forgotten.
We come in this world, and immediately we begin to weigh our life with scales of what I don't have. In this world, people want to be millionaires, people want to be millionaires, people want to be trillionaires. There's so much incredible greed in this world. And I was remembering a couplet from Kabir that we were born around 1440. And a couplet from him says, Lord, give me enough so that I can take care of my family and so my family doesn't go hungry and if a guest comes into my house he doesn't go hungry either. And I started thinking about this because I was watching a documentary about what happened in America. So much greed, so much lies, so much anarchy in the government. People blatantly telling lies and everybody believing. And not after one million, but after billions. And I said to myself, what a huge contrast this is where Kabir says just enough to feed my family so my family doesn't go hungry I don't go hungry and if a guest happens to come by he does not go hungry. We have become the society of what we don't have. We do not dream about what we have. We dream about what we don't have. Oh, I wish I could have that. Oh, I wish I could have that. I wish I could do that. I wish I owned something like that. It could be forgotten We have forgotten our own forte. We have forgotten our own possibility. If you want to be rich If you want to be rich all you have to do is be generous. If you want to be smart all you have to do is be simple. If you want to be strong all you have to do is be kind. That's all it takes. Now who here does not have kindness in them? You see what I'm saying? You were born with kindness. You didn't have to go somewhere and say I would take ten dollars worth of kindness, thank you. Everybody is born with kindness. It's free. And if you have that kindness you can be strong. That's all it takes. If you want to be smart a lot of people want to be smart. Everybody wants to be smart. Everybody wants to be smart. Everybody wants to look smart. Oh yes, I know this and I know this. If you want to be smart just be simple and you will be the smartest. Do you have simplicity in you? Or do you have to go to a shop and say I will take ten dollars worth of simplicity? No.
You have it in you? Do you think simply? No. No, no, no. No, no, no. You look at the condition of the world and it's not very pretty. So then people turn to God. Say if you were driving on a road and you were going fast, really fast, really fast and the police pulled you over and also pulled another car at random, just pulled over and instead of giving you a ticket and instead of giving you a ticket the other car and said you were driving really fast and the person goes what? I wasn't. He was. Wouldn't that happen? What has happened in this world? Is it God's doing or our doing? So why are we going to God? You fix it. We are no longer living in the world of reality. We live in the world of beliefs. I was just going to point out that you as a human being have to live in a world of reality. You are bound by that. You have to live in a world Rahim, another poet, he was born pretty much after Kabir. There's an overlap of two years I believe. He was born in 1556, Kabir dies in 1558. But Rahim says that without seeing, without feeling, without touching, only by repeating names what will happen? Nothing. Because by repeating names, by chanting names, something would come out of it. Then people would just chant rich, rich, rich, rich, rich, rich, and there would be nobody who was poor. But that's exactly what we do. Peace! Peace! Peace! Peace! That's not how peace is gonna happen. What do people chant? God! God! God! God! God! God! God! God! God! God! God! God! God! Nothing. You have to know. You live in a realm where you have to know. You have to eat food.
You cannot imagine, and now I'm imagining that I'm eating. You can imagine eating food, but being full is not a area of imagination. Either you are full, or you are not. If you are not full, you must eat. If you are full, you don't eat. So what do you know? In your life, what do you know? Do you know the simplicity that is inside of you? Do you feel the peace that is inside of you? Have you felt the riches that is inside of you? Have you understood the wisdom that is inside of you? Beautiful saying, another beautiful saying by Kabir. Resides in the ocean, everyone knows. But that the ocean resides in the drop, only a few people know. You're the drop, and inside of you is an ocean. Do you know about this ocean? Do you know about your rhythm? Do you know about your life? Your life! Your life! You go, oh, life is very complex. Is it? Complex? Or have you made it complex? Oh, that's my uncle, that's my this, that's my that, that's my this and that's my that, and that's my that and that's my that, and that's all that, and that's all that. And what is the definition of all this grand illusion in this world? You've heard the word maya, right? It's a really popular sort of Hindi word. Maya means, you know, this world, this illusion. You know what the definition of maya is? The definition of maya is, this is mine, that's yours. That's the definition of maya. Is that complicated? Is that complicated? No. Is it yours? No. What is yours? Do you know what is yours? Do you know what is yours? What is it? See? We don't know. Oh, we think we know. For some people it's like, it's like the gears are turning faster than the motor can turn. You know? What is yours? What is yours? Some people say, this is my body. Is it? Is it? It'll be left behind. People might bury it. People might burn it.
It'll be turned into ash. It'll go back into the soil. It'll be recycled. Have you thought about that? There's not that much new stuff that comes into this earth every day. Everything that's here is basically recycled. So are you. You might have been an eggplant. You want to know what you were in your last lifetime? You could have been an eggplant. A tomato. Not very profound, huh? It would be better if I said something, oh, you were an emperor. Then you would be like that. See? The reality is, chances are you were probably an eggplant, a cucumber. Maybe a pine tree. You know? I don't care. Because I should be caring about now. But do I care about now? Do I care about now? No, I care about yesterday. He said that to me. He told me that. Oh my god, he insulted me. Oh my god, he said something very bad. Oh my god, he did something very bad to me. Yesterday? Yeah. Tomorrow? Absolutely. I am enamored by tomorrow.
Enamored and enamored. Enamored and enamored. I have seen people who are very, very drunk. I have seen people who are really intoxicated. And they try to do everything. They try to stay up. And I have seen them do this. But they think they're standing straight. I have heard them try to talk. And they think they are eloquent. And they will reach for their glass. And to them, it's perfect. They will get behind the... I was once in this city where we celebrate St. Patrick's Day. And they drink a lot. And this man was so drunk. And he was trying to drive his car back. And he was in the middle of the road. And he was driving as slow as you can possibly imagine and driving. And he was thinking, I think he was doing a perfect job. This is called the state of inebriation. Could it be? Could it be that we too are inebriated with the liquor of ignorance? Drunk. Ignorance. How many people here are fascinated by the idea of heaven? How many people here want to go to heaven when you die? Do you realize the caveat? The pre-requirement? You have to die. You want to die? This is a big pull, huh? A little big? I want to go to heaven and I don't want to die.
If you are like that, I want to go to heaven but I don't want to die and you are my friend. Because that's exactly how we think alike. I want to go to heaven too but I don't want to die to go to heaven. So there is only one alternative. Find the heaven here. And is it here? Of course! Of course! And I don't want to go to hell either before death or after death. So I have to learn how to avoid hell here and there is only one way to avoid hell. Be in heaven. Because they don't meet. So if you are in heaven, you don't have to go to hell. In ignorance, it's hell. Knowledge is heaven. Not knowing is hell. Knowing is heaven. Look! Whatever you are looking for, this is a big statement. It's noted and it's stated. It's very profound. I think. Whatever it is that you are looking for is inside of you. Why is it profound? How does the person who makes this statement know what you are looking for? It's a big assumption, right? It's in fact a huge assumption saying that we are all looking for the same thing. Could it be? Could it be? That we are all looking for the same thing? We call it different things, but we are looking for the same thing. We are looking for the same thing. Like peace. Some people call it peace.
Big deal. Some people call God a deal. Some people call joy a big deal. You know what Kabir said about this? Kabir said that there's only one well and everybody comes to this well to fetch the water. The difference is of the vessels, but the water is the same in all the vessels. So somebody brings a bucket, somebody brings a clay pot, somebody brings a metal pot, somebody brings a decorated pot, somebody brings a plain pot, somebody brings a hand-made pot. The pots may be different but the water in the pots is exactly the same because it comes from the same well. We cannot thrive on our differences forever. Differences are good and differences should be appreciated. But they should not be the basis. They should not be the basis of our functioning in this world. You look a little different than me? Good. Nice. Good. Easy to recognize you and easy to recognize me. If we all looked exactly alike it would be like who am I looking for? But don't forget that we all came from the same place landed on the same port. Didn't we? There's only one port. Port Earth. Wherever we came from we came from the same place landed on the same port. Could it be we have the same mission? And the mission is to be fulfilled. A wedding takes place when a human being is born. And the wedding it's a special wedding. The infinite and the finite come together. Finite stays finite.
Infinite stays infinite. The period of this wedding for this dance, for this show for this existence, for this beautiful thing to happen can you imagine what has happened? Do you understand what has happened? In this finite the infinite has come in. Not for very long, my youth. The wedding lasts approximately 25,550 days. That's the average lifespan at 75 years of age you would only live 25,550 days. That's not a lot. Especially because a lot of it is already gone. But here's the wedding. And what is the possibility to feel joy? What is so big about joy? What is this thing about feeling joy? You don't know? When you feel joy you light up. You don't have to be reminded to smile. It comes automatically. You become content. You become you. You become rich. You become kind. You become conscious. You become real. You become a human being. What is it about a mango? What is it about a mango? Oh, when the season comes it grows. And when it is at its peak it lets everyone know. It turns a beautiful, beautiful yellow color with a little bit of red on the top. It becomes plump. It becomes... You know the look, right? Okay, maybe you... They don't have too many mangoes in Chile. How about a rose? You do have roses.
When that flower is at its full bloom is there any mistaking? Is there any mistaking? It's there. It is glorious. Okay, I know one thing they have in Chile. Grapes. You seen a grape? Is there a doubt when that grape is ripe? What does it look like? It is plump. It is ready. It is ready to bloom. It is... At that point that seed is so tight. So tight. It shines. Even through the little white powder that accumulates on the grape it shines. And maybe it even develops a little crack with a little of that juice. You know it is ready and you can just go ahead. When you are in peace, when you understand, when you celebrate this wedding, then you too and you shine. You come to bloom. Human beings, as human beings, we are not horrible wicked things. We are not. We are not. There is so much sweetness but maybe the party never happened and maybe it is time for that party to begin. Every human being has that kindness, has that possibility but maybe maybe you never have been invited to your own wedding. So, in a way, that's what I do. If you want, I can make sure you get to attend your own wedding. Because you should. You should.
This is it. It's a chance. It's a chance of a lifetime. Will it happen again? Not this one. Not this one. This one. This one. You. Do you realize how unique you are? How unique you are. I have heard people say, Oh, I'm just an ordinary guy. Sure. Your DNA, your DNA is incredibly unique. This is your basic structure. You are unique. Do you know that? In this temple, the divine has come. Not coming? Maybe. Certainly, yes. Certainty, yes. The divine has arrived. Da-da. Now, how do you know? So, where does this come from? The saga that begins with the first breath in. That's how you begin. All of you. That's how you begin.
In. In. In. In. And it begins. And it'll go like that. In. Out. In. Out. Till one day, it won't be in. It'll be out. And you'll take that last breath. It'll come out. It'll be in. Even if you take it in. It'll come out. And each breath that comes in, this beautiful swing, who is swinging this swing? Isn't this how you push the swing? Isn't this also the form of the blessing when you give the blessing? Do you know that the coming of this breath is your blessing? No. No, no, no. You want a car. You want a cute girl. This is what people pray for. A man on his bicycle going to the office who is slightly late is praying, God to do the office on the right time. And the guy who has just opened up a little shop to fix the punctures of the bicycle repair is praying to God, please send me someone.
Is that a flat tire? And God's probably going, No. This is our short-sightedness. Because we have been caught up in the Cinderella story. Cinderella's story is not real. It's not. Pumpkins don't actually become cherries. And lived happily ever after. Happily ever after. It's between two people. It's impossible. Unless one is dead. It lasts maybe a month. You know? Man, he falls in love. He has his girlfriend. the period in the beginning, the girlfriend is very careful not to show this guy anything nasty. And the guy is very careful to ensure that she sees nothing nasty. So every time she needs to take a shower, blow the hair. I mean, there's in the car, he's come to pick her up. But what is the first thing he's doing? He's looking in the mirror. He's looking inside. Here's the flowers. Then comes I do. And a week after that, he sees his wife. And she looks like an alien.
He has the curlers. Like little antennas. Hair wrapped around. Walking around in a flowing gown. No makeup. And the first time she looks at her husband, he's got the beard, a big zit hanging out. Hair is everywhere else. The bald spot is obvious. But she's like, I married that? And then you forget the first anniversary or the second anniversary or the third. That's it. It's over. Men don't think like that. Men have a very hard time with dates. They do. When men talk, I mean, look at this. This is scientific. When men talk, they talk from the left side of their brain. You know that? When women talk, they use both. Left and right. No, this is scientific. I'm not making this up. So actually, there is a lot more intelligence there. But unfortunately, the brain is like, huh? Only half a brain is working. So this is what happens.
Reality is much more beautiful than fantasy. Much more beautiful than fantasy. Because there is someone actually who you can live with happily ever after. And that is the one that is in your heart. No conflicts. No judgment. This is the reality, my friends. You are here and you are the ocean of peace, of kindness, of understanding, of happiness. Look within and you will see what I'm talking about. And if you do not know how to look within, this I am good at. That's what I do. I'm not here to sell you anything. You search. You want to search? You search. Wherever you find it, perfect. Be happy. Enjoy it. Be content. Flourish. But if you don't find it, look me up. I have, I have this way. I call it Knowledge. To know. Take your attention from outside, turn it inside, and you can see what's around you.
You can feel the ocean that's inside of you. You can feel the ocean that's inside of you. That's it. That's what I do. I said this in Lima. My forte is not to speak. Somebody could speak better than I can. Of course, they can. I didn't write this speech. I come here, I don't know what I'm going to say. All I do, I know I have to do is get in touch with my heart. That's all. When I came here, I said to myself, what's going to happen? You don't feel good. You've got a cold. You don't feel good. What are you going to say? Would have been nice to have a written speech. At least I could have just read it out. But I come here, I sit down, and I look at you. And I feel that my heart wants to say something to you, to your heart. not to your intellect, not to your logic, or else we would still be chasing each other like a dog chasing its own tail. But my heart wants to say something to you because my heart has felt that feeling in my heart. My heart would like you to have that same feeling in your life. A feeling of peace, a feeling of understanding. Am I going to tell you a way of how you can eliminate problems in your life? No.
But I can tell you a way where you're not affected by the problems in your life. Am I here to tell you about a way to stop the rain? But I am here to tell you about an umbrella so you don't have to get wet every time it rains. That's what I do. That's what I do. And it is my honor and it is my privilege to come and tell you this, that you are missing nothing, that you have everything. The only thing is you don't know you have everything. And you might live your whole life thinking, oh poor me, poor me. What is the cards that the fate dealt out to me? You have the full deck. Let me show you a game in which you win every time. It's a full deck. Not a half deck. Not a quarter deck. A full deck. It depends what game you play. There is the game of life. There is the game of understanding. There is the game of Knowledge. You know. Not a river of beliefs. I believe this, I believe that. Believing is okay. Believing is okay. There's not a river of beliefs. Believing is one step up.
Isn't it? One step up. If you know, you don't have to believe. It's okay, it's already taken care of. If you believe, you may never know. Believing does not encompass knowing. Knowing encompasses believing. What do you want? All your life, you... I say to people, how many of you believe there is a god? How many of you believe there is a god? You should be knowing this. You shouldn't just be believing. You know? If there was a rat in your room and your wife woke you up saying, there's a rat, and you said, you know what? I believe it's gone. She said, no, make sure. No. Don't believe. Make sure it's gone. Make sure. That's knowing. So, this is what I talk about. This is what I say. And more importantly, this is what I make possible for those who want to know. If you want more information, information is available. But whatever you do, know this. Not believe this, know this. That what you're looking for is inside of you. And know that there is an ocean in this drop. Know.
Even if you don't decide to pursue this, that's fine. Because the ocean will be there. It's not going to go away. The ocean of peace will be there in you. Whatever you decide, wherever you go, whatever you do, remember, you are blessed beyond belief. Beyond belief. If you understood that, you wouldn't be praying in your life. You know what you would be doing? There's something better than praying. You know what you would be doing? If you knew what's up, you'd be saying thank you. There's praying and there's thank you. Thank you. Thank you. So, anyway, you know, sometimes I feel like, you know, sometimes when you watch a movie, they give you the views represented in here are not necessarily of so and so company and that, that, that, that, that. I feel like saying the views represented in here are the views of the heart. If you have a heart, your views are represented in here. Your views are represented in here. So, enjoy. Know you are blessed. Know you are blessed. I don't have to say to you, may God be with you. I'm not even going to say that. You know why? Because I know God is. That's why you're alive. That's why you're alive.
What is the proof? Give me a proof. Well, the proof is you are alive. Yeah, this is happening. But if this was not happening, that's the end. Well, it would be a different story. But then I couldn't tell you anything anyway. You wouldn't hear me. So, thank you very much. Thank you for coming. And enjoy. Enjoy yourself. Thank you.
