Prem Rawat: Freedom Within DVD 06V1 2006

Prem Rawat, widely known by the honorary title Maharaji, has been travelling the world for more than 30 years, bringing a unique message of peace. He gave his first public addresses at the age of three, and by the age of 13, he was responding to invitations to speak in the United States and Great Britain [as Guru Maharaj Ji, The Lord of the Universe]. His message is from the heart. He speaks about the possibility for each person to find peace within, regardless of circumstances. Addressing a distinguished audience at the invitation of the United Nations Association of Malaysia, he recently said, Through the Prem Rawat Foundation, he also spearheads significant humanitarian initiatives [rubbish:: TPRF gives aid of $0.5 million p.a.] aimed at improving the lives of people most in need. From large cities to remote villages, millions of people around the world come to him for inspiration and guidance. Even as his audiences increase, Prem Rawat's message remains directed to each individual. If you are looking for fulfillment and peace, he says, the solution lies within. If that is what you want, I can help.
And now, ladies and gentlemen, please join me in welcoming Maharaj Ji. Thank you. So, welcome, everyone.
And I've come here to talk to you about something very, very simple. In this day and age, when you open up a newspaper or take a look at television, there are so many things one can talk about. Peace is an issue. Hunger is an issue. Poverty is an issue. Social unrest is an issue. And then there are people who want to better themselves, who want to make something out of themselves. So one would think it should be amongst one of these topics that I should be speaking.
But what I have come here to tell you is one, you already know it. And two, it isn't about the world. It is about you. That what you are looking for, what you are looking for, not as a mother, not as a father, not as an uncle, not as a brother, not as an employer, not as an employee, but as a human being. As a human being, what you are looking for is inside of you. I'm here to tell you how many blessings you have received. I'm here to tell you how many prayers have been answered. I'm here to tell you that you are blessed with every breath that comes into you. And every breath that comes into you is a direct answer to your prayer that you didn't even pray for. That is the nature of the giver. That is the nature of that incredible power that dances in the heart of every single human being. This is who we are.
We are always measured and judged against these different relationships that we have. You are a father. You are my friend. You are my employer. You are my employee. You are my this. You are my that. This is what you're supposed to do. That's what you're supposed to do. When we are driving in the street, we see somebody with a uniform. We even know this guy. We even know this person, but he has a uniform on. He's standing on the side of the road and he's going like this to the traffic. And we know who he is. Who is he? He's a policeman. Not a human being.
When you sever, when you sever that main connection, how is a boat tied to a dock through a rope? It's not because of the boat's wisdom. You know, I would like to be on the dock. No, the boat has to be tied with a rope to the dock. And if that connection is severed, then something disastrous is going to happen to that boat. And it is unavoidable. Nobody to steer. At the whim of every wave and wind and the currents, and the boat will get smashed on some rocks. That's what will happen. When you see people tying the boat to the dock, they make sure it's nice and tight. They have special knots that they tie. Not just a simple knot. They have special sailor's knots that they tie to make sure that the boat is tied well. You too are a boat. And there is a big ocean out there. And lots of currents. And lots of rocks. And if your rope is not tied properly and it comes undone, same fate is actually dealt to the human beings as well. And then what happens? I will tell you what happens. Instead of paying attention to the rope and tying it well, then everything else happens. We need to say a prayer. We need to do this.
We need to make this pilgrimage. From what? What does this mankind you see, what does it need to be saved from? One thing. Unconsciousness. Unconsciousness. So many problems in this world, and why do they happen? Because of unconsciousness. People say there are people who are dying of hunger. Is it because of lack of food? You must remember one thing. Today, in this world, we sell land. We buy and sell land. Land on which a mango seed can be planted. And the seed might cost money, and the land might cost money. But actually, when the mango plant sprouts from the seed, it is free. It is the gift of the giver. When the mango ripens on that tree, it is free. You cannot put money into the mango tree and say, okay, hurry up. Ripen quickly. That process is free. There is no shortage of food in this world.
But what has human being become? That he does not, or she does not recognize the value of this breath that comes in and out of you and the recognition is only made when it's too late. I've seen this, I've seen it. Not just once, but again and again and again. And the value of life becomes immense. Oh, he's gone. Then everybody shows up, oh, he was so nice. We all loved him. He was a kind man. He was a nice man. He was a generous man. Oh, I will miss him. Not one single one of those words was spoken when this man was alive. But was spoken, you do anything for us. You are lazy. You wake up in time. You sleep too much, you eat too much. But when he's gone, oh, you were nice. If it was reversed, that would be fine. You tell the person what you say after he's gone whilst he's alive, and then when he's gone, you can say all the other things. You're lazy, you ate too much, you didn't work hard enough. This would be great. Because all of those things that we despise in our lives, do we also despise ignorance? Do we hate, do we hate ignorance? It's a very good question. Because we go, and we learn, and we say, I learned this, and I learned that, and let me make a differentiation between learning and understanding. Even a parrot can learn.
Now, how big do you think a parrot's brain is? Your thumb has to be bigger than the parrot's brain. And then if you take that brain and say, okay, he needs the brain for certain other things, like feeling hunger, and breathing, and flying, and all of that, by that time, that brain is actually much smaller, the one that does all the learning and thinking. Learning, a parrot can learn. People teach their parrots, in India, they teach them Ram, Ram, and they will sit there, Ram, Ram, Ram, Ram, Ram, Ram, Ram. I know, we used to have parrots when I was growing up. That's what we did, we taught them Ram, Ram, Ram, Ram, Ram, and he'd say Ram, Ram, Ram, Ram. In America, Polly want a cracker? Parrot, Polly want a cracker, Polly want a cracker. Parrot has learned, but does the parrot understand? Parrot does not understand. Parrot does not understand Ram. Who is Ram? Where is Ram? What is Ram? Doesn't understand that. Who is Polly? Parrot doesn't understand who is Polly, and parrot doesn't really understand what is a cracker.

And so people learn. Learn, and they learn, and they learn that there is a God up there, and they learn that there is a God up there, and they learn that the God does this to you, and God does that to you, and everything bad that happens, God does it because God is angry at you. Angry, because you weren't nice. You did bad things, and God was watching you do everything. God has nothing else to do. Nothing. Just sit there.
You know, it's really interesting. That's what we have learned. Just like how the parrot learns how to say Ram Ram, how does the parrot learn how to say Ram Ram? Keeps hearing Ram Ram, Ram Ram, Ram Ram, Ram Ram, pretty soon the parrot starts going Ram Ram, Ram Ram, Ram Ram. God is up there, far from you, up there, and he watches everything you do, and he punishes you just like you would punish other people. Like if your neighbor was stealing your mangoes, you would punish your neighbor, and God does the same. Learned, not understood, that there is one power which is in the heart of every single human being. You go to temples, you go to different places, you pray to God, God give me a son. And what would God want us to say? Okay, you can have a son, I take the breath. No, no, no, no, keep the son, give the breath.
And this most incredible gift is being given to you every day, every moment. And what do you know about it? What do you understand about it? Not learned, just understand that it is the gift of all gifts, that all the blessings you could possibly ask for have been given to you, that you are a human being on the face of this earth through great kindness placed here, through great care placed here. And people say human beings are not born with instruction manuals, they are, but their instruction manuals are automatic, because the instruction is be content.
That's the instruction, it becomes obvious from childhood and it stays there till the very day you die. You do what you do to eventually be happy, to eventually be happy. Now, whether you call it happiness, whether you call it tranquility, whether you call it peace, whether you call it anything you want, it doesn't really matter. Because it is not in the names. Names came later, names came later. That beauty came way before the names.
What is your truest and most sincere desire? I know, and you know how I know? I know, not because some angel came and told me, not because one day I was sleeping and somebody whispered it in my ear. I know because I feel the same thing. I too, in my life, I want to be in peace. Peace. This is when it feels good to me. I want to be happy because that's when it feels good to me. I want to be in that serenity because that's when it feels good to me. I want to be in that clarity because that's when it feels good to me. Simplicity, not the complicated.
Simplicity of me, of you being alive every single day. The sun rises and the day begins. My day begins too and I awaken and what do I think about? Is my heart filled with gratitude or with questions? Do I lament? Do I worry? Or do I feel gratitude? Do I feel thankful? Or do I sit there, oh boy, what's going to happen today? Is this going to be, this is going to be, this is going to be, this is going to be, this is going to be, this is going to be? Problems? Oh, I have this problem. I've got to pay this money back and I've got debt and I've got this and I've got that and I've got to get this and I've got to get that.
There was a man and one day he came home and when he entered his home, his eldest son was waiting for him. This man had a hard day at office, hard day. Came home, his eldest son was waiting for him. As soon as the eldest son heard him coming in, he went and he said, Father, I'm not going to go to school tomorrow unless you get me new shoes and a new school bag. You are all, I'm sure, who have children familiar with this, ultimatums. As soon as the first son spoke, the second son comes running out. Father, I'm not going to go to school unless I have a new pencil case and a new lunch box. Upon hearing the two sons, the wife realized the husband was home and she goes, and I am not going to cook tomorrow unless you bring me this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this. And the man started crying because he realized that what he did, working so hard that he did, was so that his family could be happy. These are his words. He worked so hard so that his family could be happy, but how could his family be happy if he was not happy?

He started listening to some videos of mine, and then eventually he received the gift of Knowledge. Knowledge of how to be able to go within inside and feel the experience that is inside of you. Because I'm not here to give you definitions of theories. What does this mean and what does this mean and what does this mean? There's plenty of that is happening in this world.
And there will be new ones coming too. As the world changes, things have to be redefined. But, I am here to tell you about that one thing that is already there within you.
There is a simplicity within you. Yes, there is a lot of confusion, perhaps, but there is a clarity within you. And I'll tell you a small trick. I will tell you about a very, very small trick. People like to hear tricks. This is a small trick. And here it is. Whatever you do the most, you will get good at it. That's the trick. That's how you work. That's how we all work. Whatever we do the most, we will get good at it.
Think about it. If, if what you do the most is to become angry, you will get good at it. Pretty soon, you can be angry just like that for no reason at all. You're angry, comes flying, boom. If you laugh a lot, you'll become good at laughing. All of a sudden, you would laugh at the silliest things, which would get you in trouble. Because when the police officer says, you were speeding, and you go, ha ha ha ha ha, that'll get you in trouble. When you're traveling and somebody says, where's your ticket, and you go, ha ha ha ha ha, that'll get you in trouble.
There are people who learn or practice crying, and they get good at it for no reason at all. Boom, tears are rolling down. If you cook a lot, you get good at it. If you cook and you burn the chapatis a lot, you get good at it. You'll burn them every time, every time, every time, every time. So ask yourself. You have to answer to me. Ask yourself a question. What do you do the most? If you do worrying the most, you will get good at it. Then you will worry about everything. Things that you shouldn't even be worried about. You might even be worried about a car that you have. You hear in the newspaper, somebody's car stolen, and you go and look outside to see if a car has been stolen.
Maybe it's yours, but you have a car. This is what you have been practicing. You've been practicing how to worry, then you will become good at it. If you have been practicing lying to yourself, you will get good at it. If you have been, the most what you've been practicing is cheat and deceit, then you will get good at it. But, but, if you have been practicing joy, then you will get good at it. That's the trick. If you have been practicing peace, then you will get good at it. If you have been practicing clarity, then you will get good at it.
And so, it begs the second question. What do you want? What do you want? You have heard everybody in your life make requests of you. I'm having a conversation with each one of the people sitting in this hall and in the overflow room, and I am saying, what do you want? And not today, but what have you always wanted? Always. What has been your sincerest, deepest, most wish?
Remember, before you started going to school, homework was never a problem, was it? And tests were never a problem. And you never had to pray to God, God, you know, please pass me. This is what the students do these days. Especially, it's very prevalent in India. They study all year long. Because if they had to, they wouldn't have to bother anybody, including their parents or teachers, but they do that. Then, when the test time comes, and then instead of studying, pray, pray, pray, pray. But before you were going to school, you didn't have to do that. And then, when you saw the problem, you tried to pray to have a solution. But before you had problems, what did you want to be? What state did you desire?
And it is extremely simple. As you look at a child today, the child just wants to be happy, wants to be content. Sometimes the mother will bring the child and place him in the grandfather's arms, and the child will start crying. And the mother will explain, but this is your grandfather. And the child looks at the grandfather and cries louder, because none of these explanations mean anything to the child. Where the child feels secure, where the child feels good, child is content. And sometimes the child will be placed in a total stranger's arm, and the child is fine, happy. Because all these things that take on so much meaning for us, that he's this, and he's that, and this is this, and this is that, and all the relations, and all the ideas, and all the ideals. And I'm not saying you should reject all these.
This is another misconception people have, that if you want peace in your life, you have to give away your family, you have to give away your job, you have to give away your car, you have to give away your house. Why? When peace is inside of you, what has your car got to do with it? What has your wife got to do with it? Nothing has to be given. Only what is inside of you has to be understood, has to be reached, and has to be felt.
And how will you know? You will know. You will know as you know when you have had enough water, when you haven't had enough food. Nobody can predict this for you. What is your thirst? What do you thirst for in your life? What is your real, genuine thirst? Sounds simple? Thirst? Yes, thirst. You have been thirsting your life for something so simple, the sweet, clear water, that can really quench you. People say, do this and this will quench you. Do this and this will quench you. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. tell me you have had one glass of water so your thirst has been quenched.

There was a man, and every night he had a habit of having a glass of milk. He had given instructions to his servant, bring me a glass of milk before I go to bed, every night. One night he started suspecting that this man, the servant of his, is adding water in the milk, taking out some milk, and having it himself, and putting water in his milk, and bringing it. So he hired another servant to keep an eye on the first servant. When the second servant came, he said to the first servant, he said, do you take out milk? He goes, yes, I do. I take out a quarter of milk from the glass, add water, give it to him. He said, well, you've got to share with me. He says, what do you mean? He said, you've got to take out another quarter for me. So the next day, the guy had his milk. And now he could taste it, that this was definitely diluted. So he got a third servant, said, keep an eye on these two. So the third servant came, said, do you two take out milk? He said, yep, we do. Well, you've got to help me too. OK. And so now, three quarters of the milk was gone. Only the guy was getting a quarter, and the rest was all water. He could definitely taste it, so he got a fourth servant. And the fourth servant said, well, do you guys take milk out? He said, yes, we do take milk out. So you've got to give me my share too. He said, well, we give you your share, he's going to get nothing. He said, worry about it. Just give me my share. So that night, the guy took the foam from the milk. And when the guy was asleep, he put it on his lips, on the top of his lips. Early morning, the guy woke up and called his four servants and started scolding them. You didn't even bring me milk last night. He said, yes, we did. Go look in the mirror. You will see the milk is still there. This is what happens when it becomes complicated.
What is the simplicity? What is the reality? Then if you want to understand reality, look within you. If you really want the true peace, people think peace is the end of war. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. End of war is the end of war, because that other one will start. Peace is that peace that I am talking about. That peace that I am talking about that can be experienced when you are in the middle of the war. That's the peace I'm talking about. That is the peace I'm talking about. That is there in the heart of every single human being, day and night. Not a peace that is lack of something, but a peace that is there. That is real. Not a political decision, but a peace that is fundamental to every single human being, whoever they are. Not any distinction of educated or non-educated. Not any distinction of rich or poor. Not any distinction of the white or black or brown or grey or purple or orange or red or whatever.
Every single human being. That's the real peace. That even dances in the middle of the battlefield. Have you heard of such a peace? Because that's the real peace. That is the real peace. Boundaries have been created, and boundaries will be created, and if you are waiting for the boundaries to go away, good luck. You know what kind of peace I am talking about? I'm talking about that peace that even a prisoner in the prison can experience. You've heard of freedom. I'm talking about a freedom that a prisoner in the middle of the prison can experience. That's the freedom. That's the peace that I'm talking about. Just recently, in South America, there was an event.

They showed a DVD. It was in the prison. I just received, not too long ago, a letter from the warden of the largest prison in Asia.
Please come! People who heard your message and who have received the gift of your Knowledge have benefited by it so much. This is really, really important, and this is really, really urgent. That is peace.
You see, somebody tells us, you are free. So we go, oh yes, we are free. Ram, Ram, Ram, Ram. Polly want a cracker. Polly want a cracker. We're not free. Freedom is felt inside, not outside.
Freedom is felt on the inside. Only the heart can feel. That is why you have been given a mind and you have been given a heart. With the mind, sense the world. With the heart, sense the peace. And if you try to sense peace with the mind, it will never work because the mind will say, well, end all the wars. How are you going to end all the wars? War doesn't have to be with machine guns. Wars can be with words. Any tool can be used. Those of you who are married, no. You need machine guns to start a war. You just need two people who live together, who love each other, and you can really start a war.
True love. People want true love in their lives. Well, true love is also inside of you. All that you seek, there is something inside of you that is there. Experience it. Understand it. Live your life in simplicity. Because that's who you are. That's who you are. Live your life in clarity. Because that's who you really are. Be conscious of what you do. Be conscious of every day that is given to you. Because that day is never, ever going to come back. That which you think is yours, but can be taken away by someone else, is not really yours.
Then there is one thing that is within inside of you that no one can take away from you. And that's yours. That's yours. Empty-handed you came in this world, but empty-handed you do not have to go. Be filled. Be filled. These hands can help fill the bowl. Fill the bowl. This book when you get this life, you're given a book. I know you've read other scriptures, but there is another scripture waiting to be read. And it is the scripture of your heart. To read this book, you do not need good eyesight. To read this book, you do not need an optometrist to get glasses. To read this book, you do not need to be educated. Because this book was written before any words were ever invented.
It uses no alphabet. It never gets wet. It cannot be stolen. It cannot be stolen. It cannot be misread. It cannot be mispronounced. It cannot be desecrated. Because it is the holiest of all holy scriptures. And it's within you. Open. Open the pages. be shy.
Don't be reluctant. say, oh yes, when I retire, I will do it. You know, Polly want a cracker. Ram, Ram, Ram. All learnt. Nothing real.
When I retire, when I retire, when I retire. When my children grow up, all of you who have children, you know children never grow up. They. They. Even after they get to be 40 years old, they grow up. If they're your children and you're alive, they grow up. It's a myth. It's a lie. And sometimes the children quote-unquote grow up and leave. And they are thousands of miles away. And you as a parent are still, are they home yet? Have they called? Have they sent a letter? Are you okay? First thing, how are you? Are you okay? Because children grow up. Myth. Retire. No, no, no. That's when you feel like, okay, now I have nothing to do with all the other. Now I can finally do what I want to do. What is it I want to do? More of the same. Myth.
Truth is, it is never too early nor too late to reach the realm of the heart. There is no definition to this book of the heart. Never has to be defined and never has to be explained. Never. No first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh editions. Perfect the first time. That is the book I'm talking about. And what does it say? It says about you, your life, your existence, you. People are going, I want to be responsible. I have responsibilities on my shoulders. Yes, you do. And there's one other responsibility you have and that is the responsibility to your heart.
This passage of life can be very complicated. Trying to make the boat not hit the rocks is extremely complicated. All the wise ones have said, tie the rope well. And then you have to worry about that. But after you tie the rope not so well and the boat drifts away, then what are you going to do? It's too late. It's too late. Trying to remove all the rocks in the ocean is impossible. Trying to conquer the currents is impossible. To flatten the ocean out so the boat can be fine is impossible. The only thing that is possible is to tie it well.
People say, oh yes, when it rains, we want to get wet. So let us get rid of the clouds. I say, carry an umbrella. It's going to rain. It is going to rain. Sooner or later, it's going to rain. And when it's going to rain, you're going to get wet. And if you want to get wet, open your umbrella. And you have to get wet. It's as simple as that. That's your reality.

Come here. Spoken to you from my heart. I did not sit there and prepare a speech. A lot of people do. They prepare speeches. And they read from speeches. I speak to you from my heart. I'm a human being. You're a human being.
Here we are on the face of this earth. And people say, Well, we need an enlightened one. Well, let me enlighten you to the very fact that there is an incredible light burning inside of you. Do you really think you were sent in this world with a lamp that was not lit? No. That would be cruelty. That would be cruelty. That would be incredible cruelty. There is a lamp lit. And when it gets dark, you have to bump into things. Let there be light in your life. Your life. Not the uncle. Not the father. Not the mother. Not the this. Not the that. Maybe your life. Whoever you are.
Somebody says, You know, if I'm at an airport and somebody… In fact, there's a person who travels with me and his name is exactly the same as mine. So somebody says, you know, my name Prem and I'm calling him. And sometimes it's weird for me to turn around and say my name calling him.
But you know what? This isn't just name. There's a lot more here. When you are successful in your business, you're going to want to be happy. When you are not successful in your business, you still want to be happy. You want to be better, but you know how good you are. You understand the definition of what is better. Understand what has been given. Understand the blessings that you already have. And you will find how fulfilled you indeed are. Think about what I have said. If you want to pursue this more, It's a very simple thing. It's a very simple procedure. Express your interest. And listen to what I have to say. And when you feel that you have listened and you feel clear, then there's a gift that I give.
And it's called the gift of Knowledge. The know-how to be able to go inside and feel for yourself. This is not just words. This is about experiencing the beauty inside. Every step you will have to take, you will have to make, and you be the judge. Not me. Nobody is going to come with a report card. No, you are the judge. All this life, you are the judge. You know when you are thirsty. And you know when you are quenched. And you know when your heart is full of gratitude. And that is the way it should be. Instead of somebody saying, now you are happy. No. You should know. And you should say, now I am happy. Because I am. Not Ram Ram and Polly Wanna cracker. Stop that. It's not necessary.
You're a human being. Do not dive below the dignity of what it is to be a human. It is the best. It is the best. Because you are so blessed. What about parrots? Are they blessed? Probably. I know. I am not a parrot. I cannot relate to a parrot. Are cats blessed? Probably. There are so many of them. Are dogs blessed? Yes.
But certainly I know. From my experience. That we are blessed. It is time. And the time has come. To count our blessings. Each one. And if you want to know a way to count your blessing. Then I have a way. In which you can count every blessing that comes to you. And that blessing is your breath. Is your breath. Understand. What you are being given every day. Every day.
If you decide not to follow this up. Fine. That doesn't mean that the lamp will be removed. Because God is not like your neighbor. When you steal or he steals. He will punish you or this or that. Punishment. If that Creator wanted to punish you. My God. He could figure out ways you haven't even dreamt of punishing. Just think. Just think. Who can create the universe. Really got into punishing you. Then that power could figure out ways to punish you. That you in your wildest nightmare could not imagine. It's not about punishment.
It's about a blessing. About you being alive. That's what it is about. Understand that preciousness. Respect that preciousness. Understand what it is to be in peace. That peace that is not the absence of war. The freedom that can be enjoyed whilst you are in the midst of the prison. That's the freedom.
