Prem Rawat's Teaching about Kabir - In His Own Words

The Rawat's, father and son, were incarnations of God in the same way that they claimed Jesus had been. Apparently, Hans Rawat was and Prem Rawat is the Perfect Master of their time. Jesus and Mohammed and numerous others were also designated as bona fide incarnations of God. I don't recall Kabir being stressed as one of the lineage back in the 1970's but Prem had placed his imprematur on him in Boulder, Colorado on August 18, 1971 along with a lot of other Indians including Kabir, Buddha, Nanak, Guru Govind Singh, Shri Paramhansa Dayal Ji, Sri Anandpuri Ji Maharaj, Sri Totapuri Ji Maharaj.

Rawat no longer claims his Indian parampara and pretends to be a self-existent teacher of peace and uses Kabir as a way of gaining spiritual credibility by association. However he is not alone in this. Many Indian Godmen, gurus, panths claim to be teaching as Kabir's spiritual children so Rawat is just one of many. It's difficult for Rawat to remember the details of all of his re-incarnations, so did Kabir live in the 14th century or in the 15th century? The real Kabir would soon cut Prem's pretensions down to size.

Maharaji's Teachings About Kabir

Shri Maharaj Ji, Delhi, India, August 7 1952
St. Kabir says that whatever is done without the guidance of Guru, goes astray. Many people believe today that Lord Rama or Lord Krishna, or a flag, or the Gita, or the Ramayana, etc… should be taken as Guru, but nobody bothers to think over what has been written in the scriptures. Guru Nanak writes, in the Granth Saheb that nobody should be mistaken, because one cannot get liberation without a Guru. One who was misguided can discard hypocrisy upon getting the guidance of a Guru, and attain devotion to God. Guru is he who can transform a man into a god in no time, and can show an inner light which is more brilliant than the light of a hundred suns put together. The darkness of night cannot fade away without the rising of the sun. Similarly, until we find the Satguru, the darkness of our hearts cannot vanish. All the prophets, Guru Nanak, St. Tulsidas, Lord Jesus Christ, Lord Krishna preached about the Holy Name and Divine Light and told the public that this is the only way of getting peace and happiness. It cannot be attained by any other means. One can get relief from miseries by meditation and attain happiness.

Shri Maharaj Ji (Prem Rawat's father and predecessor as Satguru), Delhi, India, August 7 1952
Moslem saints say that even if a breath goes without remembering God, it is a sin. St. Kabir also says that if you do not remember the Name of God now, you will have to face many hardships, and there will be nobody to listen to your prayer. Everybody remembers God in distress; nobody does so in happiness. If one remembers God in happiness, he will not get any suffering. If one does not remember God while happy, nobody will listen to his prayer while he is in distress.

Maharaji's Teachings About Kabir

Shri Maharaj Ji, Delhi, India, August 7 1952
St. Kabir says that many lives have passed by talking beads, but the mind could not get peace, so he advises that you should discard the rosary of beads and take up the rosary of the mind, which can be obtained from the Guru. Though this is taught in schools and colleges, can any professors or teachers tell you how to use the rosary of the mind? It is comprised of the Mahamantra, which is "the Name which has neither beginning nor ending." Nobody can attain liberation without knowing the true and Holy Name. St. Kabir says that whatever is done without the guidance of Guru, goes astray. Many people believe today that Lord Rama or Lord Krishna, or a flag, or the Gita, or the Ramayana, etc … should be taken as Guru, but nobody bothers to think over what has been written in the scriptures. It cannot be attained by any other means. One can get relief from miseries by meditation and attain happiness. Ultimately he can attain God's Light. So the Name is the only way to lead one to liberation. … But all saints have remembered the Name. All saints and Vedas speak with one voice, that you should have love for the Holy Name. So the best act is to meditate on the Holy Name. By the Holy Name, your body will become fruitful, your spirit will be pleased, you will be free from the cycle of regeneration, and you will get liberation. You cannot get such a fate by reading scriptures. When you will remember the Name and meditate on the Divine Light while alive, you will merge with it after death.

Maharaji's Teachings About Kabir

Shri Maharaj Ji, ???a Nagar, Delhi, India, March 21 1955
Saint Kabir says, "When one's body is steady, mind is concentrated and he observes silence. Such a moment cannot be paralleled even by an age." This stage is called the trance, and one realizes God only during the trance. But nowadays people chant the tantras and mantras and rotate a rosary in their hand and their minds wander in different directions. It is not meditation or devotion. The devotion to God has been described as the brilliant light which does not require a lamp, a wick or fuel to illumine it.

Maharaji's Teachings About Kabir

Shri Hans Ji Maharaj (father of Prem Rawat), November 1963
Kabir has said: "As the rosary is being told by the hands, as the tongue is repeating 'Rama Rama' or 'Krishna Krishna', the mind is still making circles of desires. What is the use of such devotion? External devotion and ritualistic practices will not give us knowledge of He whom we hope to meet. If He is not met, if the mind is not engaged in Him, then of what value are these practices? They are all useless."

Prem Rawat Teachings About the Divine Light

Shri Hans Ji Maharaj (Prem Rawat's Father) The Essence Of Life Is Rembering Holy Name (shabd)
Kabir sumiran saar hai, aur sakal janjal. Simran - Remembrance of Holy Name is the essence of human life. I am of the opinion that remembrance of the Holy Name of God and meditation on the Divine Light only will do you good. So, everyone should take advantage of the opportunity of this human life by acquiring the knowledge of Holy Name and Divine Light. This is the religion for all mankind. This is the Light, which is beyond moon and sun and this is the true and easy method to concentrate the mind. The purpose of human life is to acquire the highest peace, that is, salvation. God is truth, consciousness and bliss and is one and the same for all. So there can be only one religion or one path for all mankind.

Prem Rawat Teachings About the Divine Light

Satgurudev Shri Hans Ji Maharaj Originally Published by Divine Light Mission, B-19/3, Shakti Nagar, Delhi 7, India - 1970, 8th November, 1970
The Divine Light has been variously named by different spiritual masters. It is called Elahi Noor in the Koran, Chandna in the Guru Granth Saheb, Noor by Saint Kabir, Bhargo in the Vedas, Param Prakash in the Ramayana and Divya Jyoti in the Upanisads. It is possible for every man to experience this Divine Light through the grace of the living master. This light is but the radiance of our own true inner essence. It is the true responsibility of man to know this light, to experience God and become one with his maker. For it is man's function to find God. Without this knowledge man is but an animal in human form. … It is possible for every man to experience this Divine Light through the grace of the living master.

Prem Rawat Inspirational Speaker Teachings About God

Shri Sant Ji Maharaj, July 29, 1966, Prem Nagar Ashram, Hardwar, India
Saint Kabir said, "You spend the night in sleeping, and the day you waste in eating. This life is priceless but you are spending it as if worth a penny." Today, I tell you the same thing but still you do not listen. If you do not value the true realization of God, then how can you say that Maharaj Ji should come back?
Christ spread the Knowledge of God in his time; what was that Knowledge? In many places, temples have been constructed, but in each temple the worshippers see the statue of only a single Saint. When they come and listen to satsang, then we say to them, "The God you worship is our God also." When Knowledge of God is spread through the whole world, there will be one religion. The Knowledge will be spread through mahatmas, because, without these great souls, it cannot be done.

Maharaji's Teachings About His Own Glory

Alta Loma Terrace, Hollywood California, August 15 1971
Kabirdas said that "If I convert this Earth into paper, whole Earth, and ocean into ink, all the woods into pen, and then start writing, the ink will finish, the paper will finish, of all the woods nothing will be left, but even then, much, much and much and much and much will be left to describe about Him." … How can I describe His praise when great intellect can't describe? I am not qualified. I am uneducated. How can I describe His Grace, His glory? Tulsidas was not able. Many and many people were not able to describe just His glory. Just glory. So much glorious! … He is the Savior of whole world. He has to save. He will save us. So remember, we can't describe it; we have got very small intellect. We just sing some glorious songs about Him, and some words, some words, few words, and we think that is the glory that we have sung. Not at all. That is not it. We can't sing His glory at all. The writers, when they just thought about Him, they left their pencils, paper, and just -- they were amazed to see His glory in this world. So much glorious! … How many people want Knowledge? (many raise hands) Yes, okay. So you have understood the glory of Guru?

Prem Rawat Inspirational Speaker Teachings - Reincarnation

Guru Maharaj Ji answers questions in Boulder, Colorado on August 18, 1971
Q: Would you speak on the subject of reincarnation?
GMJ: See, reincarnation means that a realized soul, which is one at a time, comes and reveals that Truth to people. Ram, Krishna, Buddha, Kabir, Nanak, Guru Govind Singh … and also Christ - and there are many. They are all called incarnations. They come to give this Knowledge to people so that they may be done with all the sufferings of this world. Like Krishna says, "When there will be a decline in the true religion, I will come to save it and form one religion." Which he did. And "religion" means realization. "Religion" has started from a word "realization." Élan Vital, Volume 4, Issue 1, Spring 1980

Maharaji's Teachings About Liberation

Patna, Bihar, India, December 25, 1971
Similarly, to see God, you have to wake up at His time. You have to wake up and recognize who your Father is, who your God is, and who will show you the path, which will bring liberation if you follow it. Saint Kabir says in his poems that Guru Maharaj Ji and God both are standing and he has to think to whom he should prostrate, God or Guru Maharaj Ji. And he decides that he has to prostrate before Guru Maharaj Ji, not before God, because he was crying so much for God, but God could not save him from worldly miseries. But Guru Maharaj Ji saved him immediately from all the troubles, and liberated him. And now God Himself is also visible by the meditation on the Knowledge of Guru Maharaj Ji. If I had made this poem, then you might object, but I have not made this poem. This poem repeatedly says that Guru is greater than God. Think and decide in your heart. By remembering God, you cannot be liberated. But if you remember Guru Maharaj Ji, you will immediately cross the vast ocean and be liberated.
If you have got the Knowledge of that Word, then meditate constantly. Do service under the Lotus Feet of your Lord, and listen to satsang patiently. It is written in the Ramayana that when a man is very fortunate, only then does he find satsang, and when he finds satsang and attends it, he is liberated without any effort. Again, it is said, "Have darshan of Guru Maharaj Ji." Why? Because it is written in all Vedas and Ramayanas to have darshan. So touch the Lotus Feet. "Lay yourself down in the vast, unbounded ocean of Mercy underneath. Bathe and swing on the waves and sink inside. Drink the nectar of Mercy and Grace and Blessings, and be free from all sins."

Prem Rawat Inspirational Speaker teaching about the Physical Form of God

Palace Of Peace London, 23rd September 1973
Because ha one day ha one day I was, when I went from here I was in New York and I was like on my bed and uh we was talkin' about this campaign "Who is Guru Maharaj Ji?" and then "Who is Guru Maharaj Ji?" I I'd heard of this campaign before, (laughter) I said "Who is Guru Maharaj Ji?" what kind of question is that, who's going to answer that question? So I asked Bob Mishler who was the starter of this whole thing, I said, "Bob, you have received Knowledge and you are, you have been with me, who do you think is Guru Maharaj Ji anyway? You know, who do you think he is?" And he says it's it's just impossible to explain. I said, "How do you think anybody's gonna investigate think it was Guru Maharaj Ji?" Anyway so it's like it was we found out it was a crazy campaign, wasn't supposed to be that way, it wasn't supposed to be more connected to Knowledge so that people couldn't because if there is no Knowledge there is no Guru Maharaj Ji, you know, Knowledge is Knowledge is a thing he comes for in this world and Knowledge is the thing he, he is, he is qualified by. Knowledge is the thing that he's qualified, Knowledge is his qualification and I said what what kind of a kind of a question is who is Guru Maharaj Ji?

Nobody was able to answer, Lord Kabir, Kabir says and Kabir says that, "If I take all of the woods all the trees in the jungle and make a pen out of them and take all the ocean, all the water in the ocean and make ink out of it, take all the earth and make paper out of it and start writing who is Guru Maharaj Ji I will never be able to, I'll run out of the pen, I'll run out of the ink, I'll run out of the paper and still there will be a lot more to go."

Q: What happens to people who don't understand and don't practise?
GMJ: Kabir says if you are standing on a boat and taking someone out of the water, if you can take him out of that river, well and good, take him out. If you can't, then give him two pushes more, otherwise he will bring you down with him. If you are standing in the boat and someone is drowning in the water, take him up if you can. If you can't then give him two pushes more!

Prem Rawat Inspirational Speaker teaching about Becoming One

Guru Puja Festival, Caracas, Venezuela, July 25, 1975
But you see, the trick behind it is, if we become one with God, become one with the Truth, then we cannot be separated, because we are the Truth, we are that vibration, we are that love, we are that everything that we want to be. So, premies, realize it. But let me tell you what Kabirdas thinks of this. He thinks that by diving in the holy river, you cannot be liberated. The reason why you cannot be liberated is because fish stay in that holy water all the time, and they never ever get liberated. So what's so special about you that you dive in and get liberated? He thinks that peacocks have very long hairs. They never get liberated by having them. What's so special about man that if he has long hair he will get liberated? He says that the woman who cooks all day long in the fire and gets ash all over her body, she never gets liberated. So what's so special about you? But, he says, the people who realize this Holy Word, who become one with that vibration, always get liberated, always get to the point that they want to be.

Kabir says that you can take this whole ocean and turn it into ink and you can take all the wood and turn it into pens and you can take all the land and turn it into paper and you still cannot write the glory of Guru Maharaj Ji. Why not? Because what Guru Maharaj Ji is, is opposite of what you think he is. Guru Maharaj Ji cannot be … this is the problem. This is the problem you have every day. Your mind can't figure out what Guru Maharaj Ji is. Your mind can't. You can - by Guru Maharaj Ji's Grace, by Guru Maharaj Ji's blessings - you can figure out when you make that effort. When you merge with Guru Maharaj Ji that's the day you'll figure it out - for one second - and then you'll be merged. And yet your mind can't figure it out.

one thing is for sure every time he comes, that Lord comes in this world, he never ever has yet asked anybody to have blind faith in him. He is always revealed something through which you will have proof positive about him, his identity and the light. This is exactly what happened to Kabir. This lady asked him you know, "Now you have given me experience, now you have given me this knowledge, now I know the Perfect Master, why didn't you just tell me you were Perfect Master before? ??? Save you a lot of hassle and time, save me a lot of hassle and time." And Kabir says, "Listen, if I would have told you I was it, would you have believed me? And now you know and you are saying it yourself. You have an experience of Sat and it's all very simple and logical and straightforward." It's always that way, we are human beings and believe me we have shortcomings (screaming) and that Creator, if anybody knows our shortcomings that Creator does.

Prem Rawat Teaching About Eternal Eternity

Shri Sant Yogashram, New Delhi / April 12, 1987 (Translated from Hindi)
Then I seriously thought it over, how people lead this life with such convictions and guarantees! But the next birth is not even certain. Because what are your real earnings of this life? Just think about it. It may be possible that you did a lot of virtuous deeds in your past life and that's why you have got this human body. It is okay. But do you remember what you did then? If so, then repeat the same in this life also. You will get another one. But who remembers all this? Do you know who you were in your previous life? It is just possible that you were a donkey in that life and you were employed under a poor potter. It was due to your hard labour that the poor potter earned his livelihood and that was the pious act done by you. And subsequently due to it you have got this human form. Well, if it is so, then find another potter. If you get one, then carry on his load of clay on your back. Hunh? Now, talking about the potter and the clay, it just reminds me of a saying of Kabir. He says:
"The dust warns the potter–'why are you trampling me?
Remember a day shall come when I will trample you!!' "
Why are you full of so much conceit? What are you proud of? A day will certainly come. Today you have your hands, your eyes, your body and you are taking out and molding me with these hands of yours. You are trampling me with your feet. But one day I will make you a part of myself. I shall crush and convert you into soil and you shall become like me."

If I ignore that, then the idea of Knowledge, the idea of what Kabir said, the idea of what Krishna said, the idea of what Tulsidas said - the very idea of being saved - is negated. The concept of peace is thrown out the window. The understanding of joy is chucked.

By the way, by the way there was a time that the only way you received Knowledge if you was if you were willing to dedicate the rest of your life to it. Mean nothing else. Yes it meant going in a monastery. That didn't sit well with a lot of people and Knowledge was rather rare because it was incumbent upon the aspirant to prove to the Master that they were ready. I don't know if you know the story about Kabir but Kabir wanted Knowledge from his Master. Master just said "No." He ran around ran around ran around chasing "Please please Master." "Nope. No no no no don't even come here. Don't even ask me." Things got so desperate for Kabir that he actually laid down on the steps of that the Master used to take to go down to the river to take his bath. That's how desperate things got and Kabir's Master stepped on him accidentally but knowing he's lying there and the Master uttered something and Kabir said "Okay, that's enough for me that your Knowledge." And Kabir went reciting it cause I think the Master said like"O God" or something and that's Kabir said "That's enough, that's all I need, need something from you." And then when the Master saw him his dedication he said "Oh yeah, I'll give you Knowledge." Do you know that Kabir was one number one critic of Master, any Master. Do you know some of the earlier work that he has written. It is so vile. He writes "Oh all these Masters they're are good for nothing. All these Masters you know they're fake." I mean that's what he wrote and then he receive is a Knowledge and his whole attitude changes and you know then what he writes "If you turn all the earth into paper, all the wood into pen, all the oceans into ink, it's not enough to write the glory of the Master." (applause) He did a complete I don't know what more than 180 but you can't have that more than 180 so it was incumbent upon the aspirant to prove that to the Master not the Master to say "Okay, are you ready?" No.

You look at so many, you look at look at Kabir, (sniggers), for instance, a very interesting case. This guy before, before he has Knowledge he's, he writes about Master, he writes about gurus and he's bitter, he's bitter. "Ahh, these gurus they're all the same, they're stupid, da da da da, da da da da. Now he meets up with a real Master and hehehehe he say's "Give me Knowledge" and the Master says, "Pffft, no way!" now people make this a religious issue "Oh because they, the Master didn't know what religion Kabir was so he wasn't gonna give him Knowledge. That's not true because if that was true he would have never received Knowledge. His master, his guru Ramanand OK. First he said "No!" Erh, erh, If I was a Master and somebody was writing that kind of stuff you think I'd give them knowledge? And then all of a sudden Kabir ends up with knowledge

I mean there are people Kabir died a very poor man, much poorer than those people who take his works and translate them. Ha ha ha, terrible translations cause they don't know what he is talking about. You know, to a lot of aspirants "I want to know what these techniques are," the techniques have been described by so many people, that's not the issue, even Kabir describes all the techniques. Not the issue, the issue is to make sense out of them, what you didn't understand, to be able to make sense out of that.

So, what is it? Am I going to talk about the problem that this world has? Actually I am here to talk about something that Kabir said a long time back. Kabir said, that a drop resides in an ocean, everyone knows. Billions and billions and billions of drops reside in the ocean. Everyone knows that. Thats not news! But he says, that the ocean resides in the drop, only few know about this. So I thought this afternoon would be a wonderful thing to talk about the ocean that resides in the drop because that drop is you. And that ocean is the infinite. It is the one thing that has no description. Cannot be described, so I am not even going to try! It is away from any gender, any concept, any idea. Cannot be grasped by the mind. Can be imagined by the mind, but not grasped by the mind. Its a big difference. And the reason why I want to talk about that ocean because if you decide to discover the ocean inside of you, I can help!

Prem Rawat Inspirational Speaker Teaching About Kabir

There is a beautiful couplet by Kabir: "That a drop resides in the ocean, everyone knows. But that the ocean resides in a drop, only a few know."

Think about it: That a drop resides in the ocean, everyone knows. But that the ocean resides in the drop, only a very few know. I want you to be the very few who know. Who is the drop? And what is the ocean? You're the drop. Me, you, we're the drops. And within us resides the ocean. Not words. When you can feel that ocean inside of you, you will know and understand. Then it's clear and all is as it should be. You feel alive. You don't have to wait for spring to come. Even in the dead of winter, even in poverty, you feel alive.

Maharaji's Teachings About Kabir

There is a beautiful saying by Kabir: "This illusion doesn't die. This mind that goes after the illusion doesn't die. The hopes don't die. The wants, the desires, the lusts don't die. What dies is you." When I first heard this, I thought, "What?" But then it made sense that we are here on this boat that's going down the river, and somehow we have convinced ourselves – how, I don't know – that the boat is not moving. Every time we look up, we see the scenery changing, and we say to ourselves, "Amazing. The earth is moving! Look at all those trees – they are moving. Look at all those houses – they are moving. Because, surely, the boat that I am in is not moving." So here we are on the face of this earth. And we're trying to conquer the "Grand Illusion." According to Kabir, it'll go on. All the things that we are trying to conquer, all the things that we are trying to stop or get on top of will be there as a trap for others, long after we've gone. The only thing that won't be here is you. You are the variable. It's not the trees or the houses that are moving. You are moving. You may not like it, but that's the truth. And when people don't like to face the truth, they try to explain it away.

Saved from what? What do you need saving from? You need to be saved from unconsciousness. You need to be saved from confusion. You need to be saved from doubt. These are your enemies. These are the elements that eat away at you because they rob you of the presence of knowing your existence. These are the things that make you forget you are alive. Take away the confusion and unconsciousness, and the pain and suffering will be gone, because the day you begin to acknowledge your life, you begin to understand that this life is the blessing. And in this incredible, magnificent creation, this garden has been created. Superb. What an incredible garden it is! One of the songs of Kabir says, "He has created everything that needs a foundation. And yet, in itself, it needs no foundation. He is away from all his creation, and yet he is in every fiber of that creation." How sweet. How beautiful. It is there but not obtrusive. It is present but invisible. Even what cannot be seen with these eyes is present in the eyes. These are your truths. These are your realities that you need to embrace every day. And that's what clarity is.

Prem Rawat Inspirational Speaker Teaching About Kabir

How do you avoid being robbed? How do you save your integrity? The fifteenth-century Indian poet Kabir says that nobody – nobody – is poor. And Kabir was so poor that he even wrote that he had no idea where his next meal was going to come from. What did he mean, then, that nobody is poor? "Nobody's poor – everybody's rich. But we have forgotten to open the package that was sent with us, and that is why we are penniless." This is what he said. What package? Did we come with a package? Yes. Where is it? It's right here – in this human existence. This package of human life has riches beyond belief. Gratitude, fulfillment, understanding, joy. Do you really understand what the word joy means? Joy comes whenever you feel the immortal inside of you. That's what fills you with joy. And what is joy like? Indescribable. What does contentment feel like? It cannot be described. What does peace feel like? Again, Kabir says, "It cannot be described. It is like a mute person eating candy."
