When Prem Rawat or Maharaji ("Great King") as he likes to be addressed or Guru Maharaj Ji as he called himself until the 1980's speaks about devotion it must be understood that
he is referring to devotion to himself. He believes he deseves this devotion because in 1966 he succeeded his father as the Perfect Master.

St. Kabir says that whatever is done without the guidance of Guru, goes astray. Many people believe today that Lord Rama or Lord Krishna, or a flag, or the Gita. or the Ramayana, etc... should be taken as Guru, but nobody
bothers to think over what has been written in the scriptures. Guru Nanak writes, in the Granth Saheb that nobody should be mistaken, because one cannot get liberation without a Guru. One who was misguided can discard
hypocrisy upon getting the guidance of a Guru, and attain devotion to God. Guru is he who can transform a man into a god in no time, and can show an inner light which is more brilliant than the light of a hundred suns
put together. The darkness of night cannot fade away without the rising of the sun. Similarly, until we find the Satguru, the darkness of our hearts cannot vanish.

Why is it that we all seek peace and happiness, yet due to our ignorance of the right path to attaining peace we are unable to find it? We do not know who to ask for direction; we are ignorant that happiness and peace is
the result of true devotion to God and His Knowledge. This devotion and Knowledge is not acquired without satsang and the Satguru. All scriptures unanimously declare that to acquire Knowledge, the shelter of a true
master must be sought. Today the world does not search for a true Guru, but is rather engaged in whatever devotion it is attracted to. ... Kabir has said: "As the rosary is being told by the hands, as the tongue is
repeating 'Rama Rama' or 'Krishna Krishna', the mind is still making circles of desires. What is the use of such devotion? External devotion and ritualistic practices will not give us knowledge of He whom we hope to
meet. If He is not met, if the mind is not engaged in Him, then of what value are these practices? They are all useless."

Hell and heaven are on earth, and liberation is just beyond all these points. There are two types of liberation. One is not to be concerned with this world. The other liberation is to be concerned with this world, but not this world directly, but to the Perfect Master: to be a devotee. Devotion. When you go to the Judge and He weighs your balance, right? and only your one balance is good, only good, and bad has been finished away with this Knowledge, He will ask you, "Okay, what do you want, liberation or devotion?" People who ask liberation just go there and sit there. They can do nothing. But people who ask for devotion come again onto this earth, but they don't suffer. It is always heaven for them, and they always stay with Perfect Masters. It is so very beautiful to be with the Lord. Whenever a Perfect Master will come, they'll come with Him.

I think it's completely stupid to think that God's going to do whatever you think you want Him to do. But that Almighty is going to do whatever He wants to do. That Power is going to manifest Itself in any form It wishes
to, any time It wishes to, anywhere It wishes to. Who's going to tell It, "You can't do that"? Who? And yet there is a fact related to that, and the devotees dictate that. The devotees in fact dictate. Because they are the
receivers who want to tune into the frequency. Manifestation of a Savior is going to happen to save the ones that have to be saved. That omnipotent Power will manifest Itself, establish devotion, for devotees, period. It
cannot for Itself, because there has to be a two-way transaction. The devotees have been the single most strong, powerful thing.

So premies, it's just such a beautiful thing happening more and more every day. We have to open up to be able to just become that devotee. I like that song, "Teach me Devotion." It has a certain meaning to me. And the
meaning to me is that if you are a devotee, what more can you ask for except for Guru Maharaj Ji to teach you devotion? With that devotion comes everything. It just hits somewhere, and it's beautiful. It just strikes at
the right place. Because that's all we want. That devotion is all that we want. And it's just from my experience. That's what I say: that the devotee needs devotion, a lover needs love. Because if that lover
doesn't have any love, then he's not a lover anymore. If that devotee doesn't have any devotion, then how can he be a devotee? And that's the thing that we want. There's so many ways to explain it, and there's so
many functions to it. And you can just go step by step one by one. You can say, "Okay, it's to do satsang, service, and meditation. Or it's to have Grace flow through. Or it's to have the Love flow through." Or anything.
But it all goes in one great circle, and it is to just be that devotee who can understand and who can see and who can experience that Love, who can experience that devotion that really is there. What can you say?
What can you verbally say? Because that's an experience. And how can you try to describe that experience of what devotion is like, of what that surrender is like, of what that Love is like? Even for one moment to
have Love, and not to have any selfish reason behind it, not to have any reason whatsoever attached to it. No strings attached. It's an experience! Just a beautiful, incredible Love. Love Original. Period.

Guru Maharaj Ji gives you that ultimate Knowledge which is within inside of you, that experience that we all need to know. And without that devotion, we cannot ... Because, see, the thing is, we have to have that
devotion. If we don't have that devotion, we are not devotees. And if we are not devotees, then he is not our Guru Maharaj Ji. It's not like just saying, "Okay, I take you for granted, Guru Maharaj Ji, so that'll be it.
Here I am, and let's get at it!" No! If that constant balance of our devotion varies, goes away, then that Guru Maharaj Ji -- for us, not in reality -- will also sway. Because you know, go shopping. And to these guys I am
"the Guru," period. Or some of them don't even know it. Some of them don't even recognize. And to them, what difference does it make? No difference. And when that devotion, that understanding starts happening more and
more and more, then that much more of a Guru Maharaj Ji does Guru Maharaj Ji become.
But premies, the whole thing is that that Guru Maharaj Ji can't be that big, that big, that big, or five feet. All of it! So our devotion has to be 100%. Every bit.
So we have to be completely open to Guru Maharaj Ji. Our devotion to Guru Maharaj Ji has to be completely 100%. And we can do it! Because it is from Guru Maharaj Ji that we become devotees. And from us that that door
opens, by which we make that devotion of ours happen 100%. You know, it's a fail-safe deal. You can't go wrong. Because he gives us the devotion to give it back to him. And it's a whole fail-safe deal. You can't
say, "Well, what if this happens?" There is no "if, if, if." It's just, if your concentration, if your devotion is 100%, then Guru Maharaj Ji is going to manifest 100%. And you cannot have one percent, or a half
percent, or a quarter percent of your ego and mind, or concepts, or anything like that. It has to be a clear sheet.

But I had that faith. By Guru Maharaj Ji's Grace, Guru Maharaj Ji gave me his Grace to be able to generate Grace, for me to be able to not have that mind kick on me so hard and so strong, and to be able to have that faith
in Guru Maharaj Ji all the time, to be able to experience devotion of Guru Maharaj Ji all the time. Because the thing is that devotion is a tie. Devotion is a connection between a Lord and the devotee. The only
way you can ever know the green light, the "annunciator panel" of devotion -- are you a devotee or not? -- is your devotion. As long as there is going to be devotion between you and your Lord, then there is no problem. You
are a devotee, and he is your Lord. He is you saviour. But as soon as that devotion goes out, automatically you get disqualified as a devotee because you don't have any devotion. You don't have that tie. You don't have that
thread. And in our lives, how many moments do we feel that devotion towards Guru Maharaj Ji? I was in Malaga and Marolyn sang that song for the first time. And I liked it because, "Maharaj Ji, please! Please teach us
devotion." It's so important! It's more important than the person who wrote it thinks it is important. To me, it has always been, "Without that devotion, Lord, you can't be my Lord because I can't be your devotee!
And that devotion brings us two together, manifests us in the way that I like it the most, the way I love it the most, the way I'm supposed to be, the way it's all meant to be! And this is my green light, my only indication
that, yes, I am here, and you are keeping me here to have that devotion." And devotion doesn't come until you have faith.

Holi, Miami, afternoon, 8th April 1979 And to have faith in Guru Maharaj Ji, to believe Guru Maharaj Ji, and to have that devotion towards Guru
Maharaj Ji, is to me the most ultimate experience of this Knowledge. Devotion. Never, ever has a Perfect Master gone up to his devotee and said, "Listen
devotee, because you have meditated enough, I grant you a wish." No. "You have been a devotee. You had devotion. You have surrendered. You have
done service. I grant you a wish." And what wish did Hanuman ask when Ram said, "Okay Hanuman, I give you a wish. You may have anything you
want"? Did he say, "May I, every time I come in this world, have Knowledge?" No. He said, "Look, I don't want liberation." He said, "I want devotion."

Milwaukee, Wisconsin, October 10, 1979, Evening
In Shri Maharaj Ji's satsang, he was saying that one day he locked himself in a room and he just said, "If you are really Guru Maharaj Ji, if Guru Maharaj Ji is really real ..." -- and this was before he was Guru Maharaj Ji
and he had his Guru Maharaj Ji -- he said, "If Guru Maharaj is really real ... " I guess for him devotion was that strong, his love for his Guru Maharaj Ji was strong, that even when he prayed from his real heart, "I
want to see you," Guru Maharaj Ji came and gave him darshan in that way. What is a miracle? You cannot call this a miracle. You have to call it Guru Maharaj Ji's Grace. Because it is a little bit one step beyond
it.
Yet remember one thing: that that Guru Maharaj Ji, who is creator, who is the Sustainer, and who is the Destroyer, has love enough for his devotees to come onto this Earth for his devotees; then absolutely,
unquestionably, there are no bounds to what can happen. All we have to do is to become that devotee, to have that devotion. That's all: that faith, that surrender, to Guru Maharaj Ji, that love that is sincere, that
comes from our hearts for Guru Maharaj Ji. Not in our imagination, but in reality. If we can become a devotee ... If there is Guru Maharaj Ji and then a devotee, when they join, then there is devotion. And it is said
that when that happens, when Guru Maharaj Ji and a devotee are bound together by devotion, then the purpose of that soul that devotee has been completed. That's it. There is no more to be done. There is nothing left to
be done. It has received the stage beyond liberation. It has received, it has joined, it has merged in the state which is beyond, above and beyond -- joined its Creator. It has joined its Owner. It has joined where it came
from; it has joined back to its own.
Even our arti, the way we sing, "You are my brother, you are my father, you are my ... you are my everything." And we have to make that a reality. Guru Maharaj Ji really has to become everything to us: our friend, our life.
We have to somehow disappear. And that is the only way we can disappear: by our devotion, to be completely locked in Guru Maharaj Ji's love; by our devotion, to completely merge in Guru Maharaj Ji. And so then
comes the part of, "How do you have devotion?" Again, devotion is the miracle which is beyond all miracles. Devotion is that thing that so many saints and so many people have constantly thirsted and thirsted and thirsted
for.
And all Guru Maharaj Ji is asking of us is to make that little effort happen. That's a little effort. It's that little faith, it's that tie of devotion to Guru Maharaj Ji -- not into this world. And for an instant
experience: now. For that experience that our heart yearns and yearns and yearns for.
Can it really be that hard to surrender to Guru Maharaj Ji? Can it really be that hard to have faith in Guru Maharaj Ji? Can it really be that hard to love Guru Maharaj Ji? Can it really be as hard as we make it
sometimes for ourselves to have devotion for Guru Maharaj Ji? I mean, aren't we humans? And isn't it all for us, to have faith?

That's exactly the thing with devotion. Devotion is that connection that all those devotees at that time of Jesus had to him, that Arjun had to Krishna, that Hanuman had to Ram. It's that link between what that Master
comes in this world for and what we are here for. It's that ultimate link. That's the devotion. That is devotion. When we try to take our concepts again and somehow monkey it all up, with our devotion - take our
concepts, fake our devotion and try to lay our concepts on top of the devotion - it doesn't work. It doesn't work for any of us. Because, again, it has to be sincere. It has to be the point of surrender. It has to be to the
point of that clarity where you can understand, where you can see, where it's beyond ego, where it's beyond doubt.
All Guru Maharaj Ji ... look, we can have a lot of doubts. We can have all these things. And yet, all Guru Maharaj Ji wants us to have is that devotion for him. If there were that devotion from our hearts to Guru Maharaj
Ji, then through that devotion he will fulfil us. From our devotion we fulfil Guru Maharaj Ji - what Guru Maharaj Ji wants: that love, that devotion. And through that devotion he fulfils us, what we want: that experience to
be complete, to be one, not to be fragmented in different pieces.
But the true sincere love, that sincere love, that love that's not because of a reason, that devotion where that love is so sincere - so sincere that it changes its name from love to devotion. I cannot give my devotion
to anything else in this world except to my Guru Maharaj Ji, because it's sincere. I cannot have an expectation. What can I expect? That's where I have to learn humility. That's why I have to be humble. I need not be
humble anywhere else in this world but I need to be humble when I stand at my Guru Maharaj Ji's Feet. Because he has given me everything. I can expect things but I cannot expect anything from my Guru Maharaj Ji because he
has given me everything. If I go expecting something from Guru Maharaj Ji, then I know I shall never get it. Because I have to be a devotee.

There has to be that devotion. Devotion is that basic, fundamental thing and Knowledge brings us that devotion and Guru Maharaj Ji can take that devotion. What is that devotion for?
That devotion is really for you because when you give that devotion to Guru Maharaj Ji, Guru Maharaj Ji takes that devotion and then makes it into that perfect love and gives it back to you,
gives it to every human being, you know, who has come, who has able to recognise that Grace.

Prem Rawat's "Knowledge" has three parts: regularly listening to his speeches, doing voluntary work for organisations serving him or donating money and daily meditation correctly practicing the four techniques he recommends. The techniques are so simple it's hard to see how they could be practiced incorrectly. First technique ("Divine Light") involves sticking your thumb and middle finger on your eyeballs (NB: with eyes closed) and your index finger between your eyebrows. Second technique: ("Heavenly Music") poking your thumbs into your ears and listening. Third technique: ("Holy Name") thinking about your breathing (NB: continue to breathe). Fourth technique: ("Nectar") curling your tongue backwards and tasting. Rawat's father taught slightly different techniques but either way it's difficult to see how these could produce the benefits claimed for them especially as Rawat claims His Knowledge is the only method of attaining real happiness and love in this life.
