Notes On People

"It's beautiful," pronounced the guru Maharaj Ji, on being sworn in as a United States citizen in Denver. The guru, who is 19 years old, said that "it seemed that now was as good a time as any" to give up his Indian citizenship and become an American, since his Divine Light Mission, which lists 30,000 to 50,000 adherents, is based in Denver rather than his native land. He filed for citizenship under a law permitting persons married to American citizens to be naturalized after three years. The usual waiting period was five years.
