Prem Rawat (Prem Pal Singh Rawat) whose devotees call him Maharaji (meaning Ultimate Ruler) first came to attention in the West as Guru Maharaj Ji - the self-proclaimed Perfect Master and Lord of the Universe ridiculed in the media as a fat, squeaky-voiced God boy. He had inherited his titles and position as the Satguru, The True Revealer of Light and Spiritual Master of the Divine Light Mission, India (Divya Sandesh Parishad) when his father died in 1966. His father, Hans Rawat, was a successful Indian guru, self titled HRH (His Royal Highness) Yogiraj Param Sant Satgurudev Shri Hans Ji Maharaj. As a child the youngest Rawat son was informally called Sant Ji, more formally Balyogeshwar ("Born King of the Yogis") and even more formally Param Sant Satgurudev Shri Sant Ji Maharaj. In the West Rawat dropped these more verbose titles in the early 1980's and instructed his followers to call him Maharaji. He has also changed the names of his organisations many times: Divine Light Mission (DLM), World Welfare Association (WWA), World Peace Corps (WPC) and Divine United Organisation (DUO) became Elan Vital in the early 1980's and in 2001 The Prem Rawat Foundation (TPRF) was created and from 2010 his major orgs are Words Of Peace Global (WOPG) registered in Holland, Words of Peace International (WOPI) in the USA, HDSK (Human Development through Self Knowledge) in Great Britain and Raj Vidya Kender (Royal Knowledge Society) in India. He no longer claims to be an Incarnation of God but an internationally famous humanitarian leader and teacher of peace. He's neither.

Denver Offers Divine Shelter

So the Divine Shelter at 1607 Race Street was born out of necessity. More than a "place to stay," the house provides a complete lifestyle where people with and without Knowledge can come to experience the shelter of Guru Maharaj Ji and live in a disciplined and spiritual environment. The old house still bears the marks of a time when people tried to build dwellings with craftsmanship and love. Inside there is a renovated hall where both Guru Maharaj Ji and Mata Ji have given satsang.

Get Together Get Stronger

When a person first stepped into this world and started understanding it then came the word 'destruction.' He had come out of something which had no destruction.
Because from where they come, no matter what you do, there is no destruction. But in this world where they are, they can destroy. Everything you can destroy. And this is what man is up to. It's just like a little puppy, like a little child.

Making The First Step

Today 69% of the Divine Light Mission cash flow comes from the Ashrams. They spend about 29% of that to maintain themselves and the rest goes to support the mission. 40% that is left over amounts to over a half of the support of the entire movement. When you see this, you can understand why the people in DUO are overworked and that some of the ashram premies feel really, really tired. They've been carrying the burden - one out of sixty premies - has been carrying the burden for over half of the movement. This has been going on for over a year or so.

Making The First Step

Shifting Into Third Gear

For the past two years, DLM has paid its bills primarily with money earned and donated by ashram residents. This money, along with a few large donations from approximately ten people, has allowed the mission to grow as fast as it has. According to Rick Berman, executive financial director of the mission, ashram residents account for more than half of DLM's income although they only comprise 1/60th of the premie population. Today the mission has reached a point where ashram premies cannot increase the income to keep up with the growth. Bob explained at a staff meeting lastweek, "We just don't have enough money in proportion to the level of activity we are trying to maintain.

Third World Prachar

We are concerned with, and committed to, the Ultimate Consciousness which does not allow for distinctions based upon race or social class. We aim to direct our commitment to this Supreme Consciousness in selfless action to humanity so that we may work together in an effort to meet the challenge brought on by racial conditioning, which leads to oppression and repression.

Prem Rawat's "Knowledge" has three parts: regularly listening to his speeches, doing voluntary work for organisations serving him or donating money and daily meditation correctly practicing the four techniques he recommends. The techniques are so simple it's hard to see how they could be practiced incorrectly. First technique ("Divine Light") involves sticking your thumb and middle finger on your eyeballs (NB: with eyes closed) and your index finger between your eyebrows. Second technique: ("Heavenly Music") poking your thumbs into your ears and listening. Third technique: ("Holy Name") thinking about your breathing (NB: continue to breathe). Fourth technique: ("Nectar") curling your tongue backwards and tasting. Rawat's father taught slightly different techniques but either way it's difficult to see how these could produce the benefits claimed for them especially as Rawat claims His Knowledge is the only method of attaining real happiness and love in this life.
