Prem Rawat (Prem Pal Singh Rawat) whose devotees call him Maharaji (meaning Ultimate Ruler) first came to attention in the West as Guru Maharaj Ji - the self-proclaimed Perfect Master and Lord of the Universe ridiculed in the media as a fat, squeaky-voiced God boy. He had inherited his titles and position as the Satguru, The True Revealer of Light and Spiritual Master of the Divine Light Mission, India (Divya Sandesh Parishad) when his father died in 1966. His father, Hans Rawat, was a successful Indian guru, self titled HRH (His Royal Highness) Yogiraj Param Sant Satgurudev Shri Hans Ji Maharaj. As a child the youngest Rawat son was informally called Sant Ji, more formally Balyogeshwar ("Born King of the Yogis") and even more formally Param Sant Satgurudev Shri Sant Ji Maharaj. In the West Rawat dropped these more verbose titles in the early 1980's and instructed his followers to call him Maharaji. He has also changed the names of his organisations many times: Divine Light Mission (DLM), World Welfare Association (WWA), World Peace Corps (WPC) and Divine United Organisation (DUO) became Elan Vital in the early 1980's and in 2001 The Prem Rawat Foundation (TPRF) was created and from 2010 his major orgs are Words Of Peace Global (WOPG) registered in Holland, Words of Peace International (WOPI) in the USA, HDSK (Human Development through Self Knowledge) in Great Britain and Raj Vidya Kender (Royal Knowledge Society) in India. He no longer claims to be an Incarnation of God but an internationally famous humanitarian leader and teacher of peace. He's neither.

Where Goes All The Sadness?

This satsang was given by Prem Rawat (Guru Maharaj Ji) on December 1, 1966 in Dehra Dun, India

Behold, O people! I want to tell you one thing. Everything in the world is good, but one thing I dislike beyond description. When people set out for a journey, first they worry about their arrangements: "Oh, this thing is left, that thing is left." It is a very bad habit. There is such a type of journey that one will have to go on leaving all things. Therefore, when we start from a place, at first we should meditate upon God. Whatever a man does, he understands that if he does this thing, he will get the best result.

It is a great mistake to think of the result. Lord Krishna has told that one should do work without thinking of the result. But man cannot remain without thinking of the result. He cares always about his livelihood. However, the stomach of all can be filled up. One has to fill up the heart with Knowledge. The Knowledge has got a place that's called "upadesh" (heaven). Countries are many, such as England, Germany, India, but that is not such a country. That country is something different. When that is realized, a man becomes free. Then only can he meditate on God at all times - while awake, sleeping, eating and drinking, sitting and moving - at all times he can remember.

The people say that they chant "Rama, Rama." But I wonder how can you chant it by your mouth while dying? The lips will be closed; its movement will be stopped. Then from where will come the sound? But there is a type of chanting which is never stopped. It is chanted through our life-breath.

People say to me, "Sant Ji, my mind is not set in meditation." It can be, but first you do, then see. Oh! God is omnipresent. He is present inside everybody. It is a false statement that mind is not absorbed in the meditation. In reality, such men do not like to meditate.

You see, there is no guarantee of the body. Really, I am telling you, anything may happen, anytime. But this world is blind. While seeing, it does not see. But who seems to be blind, he possesses eyes in my opinion. He meditates on God in a solitary place, living away from the world. Therefore, I tell it again and again, that one should meditate. But there is no will in people's minds. I know what is the will of their mind. Do you know? The will of their mind is that they should not meditate. They never do. It is just in the memory. If one says,

God sent you. Did He send you to die? God has pre-arranged all comforts and happiness for him whom He has sent. He sent nectar for the butterfly. Therefore have faith in God and meditate upon Him.

"My hand is all right but it moves not," you move it, then it will be moved. When you type, then it will be typed. God sent you. Did He send you to die? God has pre-arranged all comforts and happiness for him whom He has sent. He sent nectar for the butterfly. Wherefore do all these mountains, trees, rivers and such come from? I used to think: from where are all these things created? I came to know that God is the only Supreme Being who created multiple things. With the help of these things people are able to live their lives.

Who can know the maya of God? His maya is unlimited. He can do as He likes. When Lord Buddha was born, it is said that even matter (unconscious things) started moving. Plants and trees bloomed and laughed. Waves were rising in water. You see for yourself when a premie comes here, at first his face is sad, but when the premie has remained, then his face becomes cheerful. Where goes all the sadness? This is the love of God.

Therefore, one should meditate. We have our attainment only in meditation. If you did not meditate on God, you did nothing. I went to Prem Nagar and went to the top floor. I became very sad. I thought that God has provided us with everything except a school. I had wished for one and as you can see the wish is being fulfilled now. God fulfills the desire of all.

Certainly we are examined. We should not remain uselessly before Maharaj Ji. One should be open-minded, should not be silly. He should say something to Maharaj Ji. Even if he commits a mistake, it does not matter. One should depend upon God wholeheartedly.

Therefore, attainment is the meditation of God. We have to reach across the ocean and go to that island. To attain that we have to be released from here. We have to be rescued. We have to attain salvation. We have to depend upon God only. Angadh told that he would cross the ocean by jumping, but would not be able to come back. Hanuman Ji didn't speak anything, but jumped across the river and came back again. What I mean to say is have faith in God and meditate upon Him.

Prem Rawat's "Knowledge" has three parts: regularly listening to his speeches, doing voluntary work for organisations serving him or donating money and daily meditation correctly practicing the four techniques he recommends. The techniques are so simple it's hard to see how they could be practiced incorrectly. First technique ("Divine Light") involves sticking your thumb and middle finger on your eyeballs (NB: with eyes closed) and your index finger between your eyebrows. Second technique: ("Heavenly Music") poking your thumbs into your ears and listening. Third technique: ("Holy Name") thinking about your breathing (NB: continue to breathe). Fourth technique: ("Nectar") curling your tongue backwards and tasting. Rawat's father taught slightly different techniques but either way it's difficult to see how these could produce the benefits claimed for them especially as Rawat claims His Knowledge is the only method of attaining real happiness and love in this life.
